• A humbucking pickup is composed of two coils side by side, which makes the signal approximately doubled when the two coils are wired in series (which is usually the case). Humbuckers also have a fuller (fatter) tone, and are generally less bright than a single coil, but are hum cancelling and preferred by those seeking a fuller sound from their guitar.

Potentiometers:

Potentiometers (often abbreviated as "pots") are variable resistors and are used to control the volume and tone of the pickups. Depending on your style, you may have one or more. Besides functioning as tone and volume controls, they can also be wired to blend two pickups together, attenuate one coil of a humbucker, and so on.
